Potassium Correction Formula

K+ correction = Deficit + Maintenance

K+ Deficit (mmol) = (4.0 – K+) x 0.3 x Wt
K+ Maintenance (mmol) = 1 x Wt
Requirement (gram) = (Deficit + Maintenance) ÷ 13.3 mmol

Eg: Current K+ 2.8, Wt 50 kg

K+ Deficit (mmol) = (4.0 – 2.8) x 0.3 x 50 kg = 18 mmol
K+ Maintenance (mmol) = 1 x 50 kg = 50 mmol
Requirement (gram) = (18 mmol + 50 mmol) ÷ 13.3 mmol = 5 gram

Paeds safe rate: [Required K+ (gram) x 13.3 x drip rate] ÷ [500 x Wt (kg)]

Safe rate 0.2 – 0.4 mmol/kg/day

10 mL Mist KCL = 1 gram K+
